MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City made the largest contribution to the Philippine economy last yearbetinm, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Data released by the PSA yesterday showed that among highly urbanized cities (HUCs) and provinces, Quezon City accounted for the biggest share of the economy at six percent in 2023.

Makati placed second with a 5.6-percent share followed by Laguna with 4.9 percent.

“These three economies recorded trillion-peso Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” the PSA said.

Quezon City’s economy totaled P1.27 trillion while Makati had P1.18 trillion and Laguna had P1.03 trillion.

Two other Metro Manila cities made it to the top 10 largest provincial and HUC economies: Manila, which ranked fourth, and Taguig in the ninth spot.

The city of Manila accounted for 4.7 percent of the economy while Taguig City had a 2.7-percent share.

Two other provinces in Calabarzon are also among the top 10. These are Cavite, which accounted for 3.7 percent of the Philippine economy and Batangas with 3.1 percent.

Bulacan had three percent contribution and Pampanga accounted for 2.7 percent.

Davao City was the only economy outside Luzon included in the top 10 provincial and HUC economies, contributing 2.5 percent.

“In terms of economic performance, all 82 provinces and 33 HUCs posted economic growth in 2023 from their levels in 2022,” the PSA said.

Batanes recorded the fastest economic growth at 14.5 percent last year, the agency said.

Camiguin ranked second as it posted 11 percent growth followed by Puerto Princesa City in third place with 10.6 percent growth.

Also part of the top 10 fastest-growing provinces and HUCs are Iloilo City (10.5 percent), Bacolod City (10 percent), Aklan (9.5 percent), Lapu-Lapu City (9.4 percent), Baguio City (nine percent), Lucena City (8.9 percent) and Parañaque (8.7 percent).

"In our case, it's already a closed book," Padilla said.

“As we look ahead, we must recognize that the challenges you face are growing more complex. Climate change, rising sea levels, and geopolitical tensions mean that the stakes have never been higher. Patrolling a coastline that spans over 37 million kilometers and watching over our Exclusive Economic Zone is no small feat,” Marcos said. 

“The 10 provinces and HUCs recorded economic growth higher than the 2023 national GDP rate of 5.5 percentbetinm,” the PSA said.
