Lakbayan, Manila Water’s water trail program, has engaged over 100,000 participants, including representatives from academic institutions, local government units, national government agencies, private organizations, and even international agencies since 2006.

MANILA, Philippines – East Zone water and wastewater provider Manila Water continues to renew its call for the public to preserve and protect water sources through its flagship advocacy program, Lakbayan or Water Trail program.

Lakbayan offers an immersive experience into the company’s operations by way of guided tours of its facilities, from the raw water source to treatment and distribution where participants gain a deeper appreciation of the world-class processes involved in ensuring the delivery of safe, potable water to households and businesses across eastern Metro Manila.

Beyond underscoring how Manila Water maintains the reliability of 24/7 water supply in its concession area amidst the challenges of climate change, the program also highlights the company’s wastewater management and treatment systems, emphasizing the company’s commitment to environmental compliance and sustainability.

To recall, at the time the contract was terminated last August—four years after it was awarded—AllCard delivered 49.9 percent of its commitment to supply raw materials for the production of 116 million blank cards.

Since its inception in 2006, Lakbayan has engaged over 100,000 participants, including representatives from academic institutions, local government units, national government agencies, private organizations, and even international agencies eager to learn about the company’s best practices. These include Manila Water’s globally recognized management of non-revenue water (NRW).

The guided tour begins at Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan, before proceeding to Ipo Dam and La Mesa Dam, which collectively provide more than 90% of Metro Manila’s water supply. Participants then visit the historic Balara Treatment Plants in Quezon City, among the company’s oldest facilities, and conclude their journey at either a sewage treatment plant or a septage treatment plant, completing the comprehensive water trail.

Over the years, Lakbayan has earned numerous local and international accolades for its contributions to water education. It also serves as a key initiative under Manila Water’s ‘TOKA TOKA para sa Malinis na Ilog’ campaign, exemplifying the company’s dedication to best practices and environmental sustainability.
